The timing of sporting events can be a challenge, as there are many details that should be considered. However, it is possible to achieve success if we have the right tools and knowledge. We have prepared the following Blog with tips to keep in mind when timing a sporting event with RUFUS.
Note down ✍️ to improve the quality of your work 🤓:
1. How to start a race in RUFUS (differences between starting and synchronizing a race)
Pressing the “Start” button will activate the race clock and reception of passing through checkpoints from the start points. If the start time is not set, RUFUS will display the current time of the day on the running clock. To show the clock with the race time we must configure the start time of each of the laps.
To do this we must open the event properties in the “Races/Routes” tab. There we will configure the start time, pressing on the drop-down in the corresponding race.
NOTE: If the set time is later than the current time, pressing start will start a countdown, when it reaches zero, the count-up race will be activated.
When synchronizing on its own, it does not start a race, it is just a quick setup of the start time that is used to set the start time of a race. To activate the reception of passing through checkpoints from the start points and start the race, we must select the “Start Receiving Data” checkbox in the “Synchronize” section.
2. The difference between taking start timing or not (enable or disable checkpoints)
It is possible that in a race we do not need to take the starting time or even disable the passing of some control point. This is why we must select a certain control point.
We must open the “start point” tab and remove the check mark from the checkpoint that we wish to disable in its respective checkbox and in the corresponding device.
Note: This technique is also useful after the race of the runners, to avoid timing mistakes on start. After the last runner passes through the start checkpoint of the race, we disable this checkpoint. With this we ensure that all times start from that moment on the checkpoint finish.
3. How to export Racecheck files to kiosks (RUFUS Kiosk
We access to the event properties and navigate to the “Racecheck” tab. In the case that we want to export our file to a remote FTP server and then be downloaded by the RUFUS Kiosks, select “Export to FTP” located in the upper left corner. The configuration options will be enabled, where we must enter the URL of our FTP server and its credentials.
4. How to enter manual times
RUFUS allows the entry of manual times, either as a form of backup, or to add times to a competitor who does not have a chip. To do this, we must select the “Results – Classifications” menu, and find the “Manual Times” section.
To enter a manual time, we simply select the destination control point in the drop-down and enter the competitor’s number. We can validate the operation by clicking on “Validate Time”, or by pressing the Enter key.
5. Exchange times
A simple way to exchange the position of two athletes without editing times, is to exchange the times of the runners. To do this, open the participant’s action menu by right clicking on the athlete to which we want to alter their position. We select the option “exchange times” and place the competitor number with which we want to exchange times.
6. Multiple selection
Sometime we would need to disqualify or change the test to more than one participant. To perform this action without having to do it one by one, RUFUS added the multiple selection function. It is as simple as holding down the ctrl key and clicking on each participant we wish to select. Once the desired participants have been selected, we can apply the “multiple” action on all of them. Right clicking on any of them will open the action menu.
